Welcome to Mrs. Barrett's Homepage!

I am thrilled to be starting my second year back at Northwestern Elementary in the position of school counselor. I previously taught 2nd grade here several years ago and have wonderful memories of being in the classroom. My current role allows me to work with students and families inside and outside of the classroom which is the best of both worlds for me! I truly believe that a child's social and emotional health is vital to success in all areas of life. It is my goal to help every child succeed in school through the development of kindness & empathy, responsibility, positive relationships with peers, teachers & family, and strength building. I am looking forward to working with all of you throughout the year!

Habits Of Happy Kids

Once a month I have the opportunity to work with all students in their classrooms (K-6) in order to develop a healthy sense of self and positive interactions with others. This year we will continue to explore the Habits of Happy Kids developed by Stephen and Sean Covey through the Leader in Me framework. The purpose of the framework is to develop both private and public habits that encourage a respect for self and others, self-confidence, responsibility, empathy, independence, and teamwork.

A new habit (pledge) is introduced each month during morning announcements. During my class visits we discuss the meaning of the pledge and how to apply it in our lives at school, home, and in the community. Each month, your child will bring home a note from me that explains what we discussed in class and tips for applying the habits at home. I look forward to building a strong partnership between home and school for all of our Northwestern families!
